The South West region has a great climate for growing produce, hot summers, wet winters and crisp salt air means there’s a rotating supply of produce to taste each season. Here’s some of the fantastic produce you can taste on tour with Forage Safaris.
Seasonal produce to taste on tour
Olives
The Mediterranean weather in the South West is perfect for growing olives. Crisp cold winters and warm springs combined with well-drained soil means you’ll get to taste some of the best tasting olives around! Olive harvest is usually around April/May, if you are travelling around that time we can certainly check in with the farmers to see if we can witness this event.
Flowers
Who doesn’t love a Flower farm? Our tour takes you to visit fields of looming flowers like Proteas, sunflowers and everlastings – great photo options as well as a chance to just take in the beauty. There is nothing like flowers as far as the eye can see!
Organic vegetables
Meet the organic farmers of the South West region who work with nature to produce organic vegetables like avocados, chestnuts, truffles, apples, pumpkin, garlic and so much more. There’s a huge range, so pop on tour with us to lean more! Dedicated agritourism day tours explore the Southern Forests and Valley region, where we forage from farm to farm.
Blueberries
Blueberries grow big and juicy here in the Margaret River Region during the summer months. With our rich soil and sunny climate, the South West is the ideal spot for growing these sun-soaked berries! Depending on the seasons, January to February is the perfect time to pick your own whilst on tour.
Truffles
Indulge in the earthy flavours of the world’s most exquisite fungus, the truffle! Hunts are on offer during the winter seasons, rug up and hop on an exclusive tour with Forage Safaris, meet the farm dogs as they frolick with you through the truffle orchards and taste “black gold”, the Perigord Truffle.
Honey
Sample locally harvested honey! Many of our honey farmers migrate their bees to different sites to catch the different blooms as the season changes, promising different varieties enhanced by the surrounding flowers. The honey flavours change with the flowering bushland which ensures natures sweet treat never stops giving.
Wine
The Margaret River Region and the surrounding regions are famously known for their award-winning wines, so needless to say, you will be tasting some delicious wines while on tour with us! From Cabernet Sauvignon to Chardonnay, the Mediterranean climate with strong salt air and cooling afternoon sea breeze, makes for some fantastic vintages you simply have to try!
Avocados
Hot summers and rainy winters make for ideal conditions to grow avocados, so here in the South West region, you can be sure to sample delicious, creamy avocados! Due to climatic differences of the growing regions, WA avocados can be available all year round. Generally harvesting between September to January.
