Forage Safaris - one year into the South West food adventure

It’s nice to get back to our roots and explore exactly where produce unique to Western Australia’s South West comes from. The ‘Foodie Adventures’ created by Forage Safaris does exactly this – giving you the opportunity to travel the ‘back roads’ on a foraging food tour while meeting, speaking, and supporting skilful farmers and producers along the way.

After 1 year of operation in the plentiful South West of WA, Forage Safaris has been described as “a tour like no other” and has seen heartened customers enjoy its seasonal and immersive full day, half day, sunset, and late afternoon tours.

A key part of the tours has been to forage at each farm visit (pick up produce along the way) – an experience unique to Forage Safaris which has seen customers taste diverse produce such as freshly cooked marron, olives and honey as well as enjoy farm walks, meeting the animals, pick your own and so much more. Some tours have even included harvest viewings and participation as an added bonus. Each experience is bespoke and encounters with the farmers and producers gives a behind the scenes insight into life behind the farm gate.

Opening the farming sector to locals and visitors was no easy feat but has seen the business flourish into a seamless adventure where everyone benefits. Developing the food and farm tours involved thought into seasonal offerings – like apples, potatoes, olives, chestnuts, almonds, and grapes which are at their best in Autumn.

Exclusive picnic boxes were added into the mix with good quality cutlery and stemless wine glasses to complete the full gourmet picnic experience. Customers settle down to eat food collected along the way in a setting distinctive to the farming parts of the region. Seeing where the produce comes from and eating it while on tour gave them the opportunity to build an authentic connection to the land while learning something new about food and country life.

Touring with Forage Safaris is an experience well suited to small groups, couples, or families who are open-minded and curious about the continuous farming wheelhouse. With tours departing from Busselton or Margaret River, there are options for everyone. So, if you are looking for something other than a wine or brewery tour, then this is the perfect experience for you. However if wine or gin tastings are on your wish list, private tastings can be requested.

Forage Safaris is grateful for the support and interest it has received in its first year of operation and looks forward to many more years showing off the farming sector to visitors and locals while supporting producers along the way.
